Fall is such a fun time of the year. It’s a time to shift from the busy, outdoor-oriented schedule of summer to a more reflective, restorative time. Take advantage of the change in the seasons to assess your health and take steps to improve it. Are there areas where you would like to make improvements? What do you think you are doing well? Is it time for your annual physical and/or flu shot? Sometimes just a few small changes or adjustments can have a huge impact.
Here are a few ideas to help you step in to fall with confidence.
1. Stock up on citrus: While it is a myth that mega-dosing on vitamin C will heal or prevent a cold, foods rich in this nutrient (hello, citrus)! help support immune function, iron absorption, and promote healthy skin and bones. Try enjoying vitamin C naturally with citrus. Plus, the bright-colored fruit is simply cheery on a wintry day. Maybe the adage should be rewritten as, “an orange a day to keep the doctor away!” Fall is a great time to assess your diet and supplements and make sure you’re getting all of the essential nutrients and vitamins your body needs.
2. Sip a cup of (caffeine-free) tea: Warm drinks are not only comforting and cozy as the weather turns colder, but many herbal options offer health benefits while avoiding caffeine jolt. Ginger is great for aiding digestion and turmeric may boost immune function while also providing many other health benefits. Studies show green tea may have a number of health benefits. It’s a great time of the year to enjoy some caffeine-free tea varieties such as apple and cranberry.
3. Soak up (a bit) the sun: Have you ever heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD? It’s a reality that 10 million Americans face when the days shorten and the weather is less predictably sunny. Taking advantage of the sun for just a few minutes a day can be a huge help. You can also make an effort to pull those shades open to maximize the amount of natural light you’re exposed to each day. A walk in the crisp fall air is another great option for enjoying — and reaping the benefits — of a bit of sunshine and exercise.
4. Take a nap: The change of pace creates a great opportunity to catch up on much-needed sleep. You are indeed much more susceptible to sickness when you are fatigued and sleep-deprived. So, grab that warm blanket and cozy up for a short afternoon nap this weekend. Try heading to bed a bit earlier and/or making your bedtime ritual more sleep-friendly. Your body will thank you.
5. Prep for the holidays early: The holidays are one of the most enjoyable and memorable times of the year, but also according to statistics, one of the most stressful. Take advantage of this lull to get a jump on holiday preparations early so you can fully enjoy the holiday season without the stress.
Fall is a wonderful time of year and a feast for the senses. With the bright colors, beautiful smells and cozy textures, it’s a great time to rejuvenate and to reassess. Take the time to pamper yourself and boost your immune system with restful and restorative measures.
